Special Effects Makeup Schools
There are only a few special effects makeup schools in the country. We are a special effects makeup school in Florida. If you wish to be successful in this field, you must develop highly specialized skills. At Cosmix you will learn the design and creation of realistic prosthetic & dental appliances. We recommend that students who want to work in the film industry enroll in the Master Makeup Artistry Program to acquire the necessary skills to work across the entire spectrum of makeup artistry. You will be much more valuable if you are well-rounded. Students who are under a time or budgetary restraint and are not able to attend the Master program would benefit from taking the 5 week Character Makeup Course in addition to SFX Makeup.

Blue Whale Studios Special Effects Makeup Artists
Cosmix School of Makeup Artistry has partnered with Blue Whale Studios. They are a full service creative studio focused in Special Effects Makeup based in Atlanta Georgia. Each of Cosmix’s Special FX Instructors is a currently working Special FX Makeup Artist. This alliance was formed out of our commitment to excellence and to escalate our student’s technical skills focusing more on current industry practices including Silicone Prosthetics & On-Set Application for Film.
For over twenty years, Blue Whale’s makeup artists and technicians have provided services to the film, television, and entertainment industries. They have a team of on-set I.A.T.S.E. film union makeup artists and a lab crew who design and create prosthetics, specialty costumes, puppets, and other props for the industry. Their clients include Walt Disney, Sony Pictures, Universal, Lionsgate, Warner Brothers, Fox, Xbox, and Microsoft.
Matthew Silva, Co-owner of Blue Whale Studios Inc., has been working as a makeup artist for over 11 years and has been part of makeup teams on many major films. His acute attention to detail makes Matthew an extremely strong and versatile artist, with a skill set ranging from beauty and prosthetics to extremely technical sculpture, armor making, and prop building. His ability to lead and manage a team has helped the company expand to where it is today.
Jonah Levy, Founder of Blue Whale Studios Inc., has been passionate about special effects makeup for most of his life. He has been working as a professional in the Makeup and Special F/X industry for over 24 years and has been part of makeup teams on many major motion films. His skills include everything from beauty makeup and body painting to advanced prosthetic and creature design. He works and teaches around the world, and loves to share his passion with others
SFX Makeup: Prosthetics Makeup

The first special effects makeup course, SFX Makeup: Prosthetics” equips students with makeup & lab techniques to create special effects for film, television, and theater. On Day 1, students apply a prosthetic. This introduces students to prosthetics and emphasizes the importance of proper textures, edges, and the look of a finished application. This helps them as they begin designing and sculpting.
Students learn about silicone, gelatin, and foam latex materials. They design, create, and apply different types of prosthetic and dental appliances. The entire process includes conceptualization, life casting, sculpting, molding, airbrushing techniques, and application techniques.
Blood delivery methods are also included. Their final project for Special FX Makeup is captured in a photo shoot.
Creature Design
Pre-requisite Special FX Prosthetics
90 clock hours- pre-requisite FX-2
Students learn how to design, construct and mold an advanced three-dimensional sculpted character. This course is ideal for artists interested in working in a special makeup effects lab building projects for film, television and theatrical productions, haunted houses, toy or video game productions and theme parks. Our FX Makeup students produce a completed creature from conceptual design to final application. Their final project is captured in a photo shoot.
